Blanquillo – Rainforest Expedition 8D/7N

¡No te pierdas este mensaje de blog!
“Collpa” means in Quechua (mountain native) language salt of the earth. Also rainforest natives used it to designate certain areas used by animals indefinitely for a supplement of salts and minerals in their diet. These help against strong alkaloids and toxins that are contained in many rainforest’s plants and trees. During the Blanquillo – Rainforest Expedition, we visit one of the most famous “collpas” (that means clay-lick in English) – Collpa Blanquillo!! There you are given an opportunity to see a huge number of macaws (guacamayos), parrots and parakeets!!
We also enjoy being in a very close touch with the wild nature as we spend 2 nights in a jungle campsite!! In addition, we observe wildlife and lush vegetation of the Culture Zone of the Manu National Park, Blanco Lake (Cocha), Camungo Lake as well as the different biosphere on the way to Puerto Maldonado!!

Manu Biosphere Reserve - Manu Jungle Trips

Manu National Park.- Covering an extraordinary geography. Manu Biosphere Reserve encompasses a series of distinct biotic regions that range from over 13,700 feet (4,020 meters) in height down to lowland tropical rainforest only 1,200 feet (365 meters) above sea level. Between snow line and 11,500 feet (3,500 meters) lies the Puna, a tundra-like area characterized by pale yellow ichu grass, isolated blue lakes, tassel-eared llamas, and remnant forests of native Qenua. These native forests are some of the most ecologically threatened in Peru, and contain amazingly high levels of endemism. The photo above shows a view from Tress Cruces, near the trance of , in the background rises the Urubamba Mountain range or cordillera Urubamba the Reserve.

Manu Reserve Zone.- Crossing over the eastern edge of the Andes, the traveler journeying towards the Manu River often encounters a thick blanket of clouds the beginning of the cloud forest. In this mysterious, ghostly-lit world live brilliant-red Cock-of- the-Rocks, Spectacled Bears, and scores of dripping tree ferns, bromeliads, and orchids. Ranging in elevation from 11,500 to 3,000 feet (3,500 to 1,000 meters), the cloud forest is one of the least studied of environments; at least 50% of its plant species are found nowhere else on earth. Above, a view to the south- east from Tress Cruces.

Manu Peruvian Amazon.- Manu Biosphere Reserve experiences seasonal differences in rainfall due to its distance from the equator. Its dry season occurs from May to September, followed by the wet season which runs from October to April. Unlike temperate latitudes, tree flowering in Manu occurs at many different times of the year depending upon the species. Since individual trees of a single species are widely scattered throughout the forest (that is, species diversity is high while species density is low) many tree species flower simultaneously so that their pollinators monkeys, birds, bats or bees can transfer pollen from one tree to another. A common sight, therefore, is a sea of green rainforest canopy punctuated by widely-scattered eruptions of identical color. The colors advertise the availability of nectar, and hence the trees’ sexual readiness, to their indispensable pollinators. LEFT: Trees (Meriania tomentosa) flowering at 8,000 feet (2,500 meters). BELOW: A rainforest toad (Bufo sp., veraguensis group) on the hunt. While supreme predators in their own right, many Bufo species protect themselves against predation both by secreting skin toxins and as a last resort by gulping air and inflating themselves to a difficult-to- swallow size.

MANU BIOSPHERE RESERVE 8 DAYS 7 NIGHT

MANU NATIONAL PARK 8 DAYS / 7 NIGHTS

MANU NATIONAL PARK: The Manu National Park is situated in Southeastern Peru where it covers 1.9 Million hectares. Around 6500 Quechua and 2000 Amazonian peoples are living inside the Reserve. The Manu National Park is concerned by 3 major biogeographically provinces (the Puna, the Yungas and the Amazonian provinces). It ranges from 200 to 4020 m a.s.1. Combined with topographic, soil and climate conditions; The Manu National Park is characterized by a very high level of diversity (Natural World Heritage Site). Some of the .wildlife species are endangered.

The Manu National Park is composed of 3 main areas: a core area ( Manu National Park) devoted to conservation, a buffer area including indigenous territories and private ecological reserves, a transition area with bio geographical boundaries and experimental, application and traditional use areas. The biological station of Cocha Cachu allows to carry out different researches on biological species. and ecosystems. An inventory of the biodiversity was undertaken in  Manu National Park since 1987. Planning and monitoring research are also performed in the core and buffer areas. An applied research programed aims to set up sustained management of biological resources such as Cedrela odorate and Podocnemis unfilms. Since 1991 an agroforestry project has been initiated (soil fertility, fallow agriculture) and complemented by studies on animal husbandry systems, fodder for ruminants and fishery resources. Indigenous population’s ownership of the land is recognized by the State (traditional use area). Colonization around The Manu National Park took place during the forties with logging and farming activities. Resident populations have access to natural resources through mining subsistence farming and cattle rising. An integrated conservation and development project of the Manu National Park aims to manage the resource base, to improve social and economic development and to extend

MANU WILDLIFE

the rainforest, water is one of the primordial elements; its abundance is direct ly  proportional to the surrounding vegetation's luxuriance. Here, at 5,900 feet (1,600 meters), the air is completely saturated with water vapor. As the water condenses, it gathers into rivulets and then into streams, increasing in strength as it continues its unrelenting march towards the sea. BELOW: A tree frog (Hyla callipleura) remains alert for a meal at 5,300 feet (1,600 meters). Many frogs in this family deposit their eggs on vegetation overhanging the water. When the tadpoles hatch, they simply drop into the water and swim away. By means of this strategy, the frogs avoid aquatic predation of their eggs.

Manu Biosphere Reserve Zone

Manu National Park (Manu Biosphere Reserve Zone )

This is one of the last great wilderness areas on the planet. Protecting me headwaters of the River Manu, the park of 1.53 million hectares is staggeringly diverse flora and fauna. It is also home to indigenous group recently had been completely uncontested. Difficult to get to and with . restriction on the numbers allowed to visit the area, the park offers the chance to see sever different rainforest mammals which, with luck, include the giant otter, black caiman, jaguar and ocelot. It is also home to at least 13 different types of primate Manu has for a long time been highly prized as a destination by ornithologists an the current bird count has just topped the thousand mark. There are several small macaw and parrot clay licks in the reserve.
Manu Biosphere Reserve is accessible from Cusco and visitors stay at Manu Lodge, the only tourist facility actually in the reserve.

This is not a destination for those on tight budgets. Travel in this area is expensive and time-consuming. Due to Manu  international reputation its limited, though excellent accommodation is often full. The best way to avoid disappointment is to book well in advance through a tour operator (eg: Eco Summer Expeditions, Forum Travel, Holbrook Travel, see page 277). Victor Emanuel Nature Tours offer outstanding trips for serious birders (two weeks, US$2,750). Otherwise book with a reliable tour operator in Lima; the best is Rainforest Expeditions.
