the
rainforest, water is one of the primordial elements; its abundance is direct ly proportional to the surrounding vegetation's
luxuriance. Here, at 5,900 feet (1,600 meters), the air is completely saturated
with water vapor. As the water condenses, it gathers into rivulets and then
into streams, increasing in strength as it continues its unrelenting march
towards the sea. BELOW: A tree frog (Hyla callipleura) remains alert for a meal
at 5,300 feet (1,600 meters). Many frogs in this family deposit their eggs on
vegetation overhanging the water. When the tadpoles hatch, they simply drop
into the water and swim away. By means of this strategy, the frogs avoid
aquatic predation of their eggs.
